DOMO is considered one of Australia’s most successful and respected retailers of prestige global furniture brands thanks to its owner and founder, Frank Novembre.
The story begins in 1984 when Frank made a bold move from merchant banking to furniture retailing after securing the distribution rights for the iconic French classic furniture label, Grange. It was during Frank’s search for the perfect coffee table for his latest home renovation where he discovered the Grange piece in a magazine. The furniture company was seeking an exclusive Australian distributor and reached out to Frank.
“Grange still had the hand-written note with my enquiry for one of their beautiful coffee tables and out of the blue they got in touch, wanting me to not only buy a coffee table but to become an official stockist.”
“I knew there was nothing else like it in Australia and saw it as an opportunity not to be missed,” says Frank.
Trading as Grange Furniture Australia for 19 years, Frank formally renamed the store to DOMO in 2003, which translates to ‘home’ in Latin.
Recognising a significant gap in the Australian market for luxury European furniture, Frank decided to approach leading international designers to build on the exclusive offering with contemporary indoor and outdoor ranges.
The stable of prestigious brands stocked exclusively by DOMO in Australia continues to evolve with over 13 brands currently available including Ligne Roset, Duresta, de Sede, Roda, Marchetti, and Sika Designs.
“With no other genuine European furniture retailers, we quickly gained a competitive edge and have maintained this even through difficult retail events such as the Global Financial Crisis,” adds Frank.
Even today, Frank still oversees each of the seven showrooms located in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland with more than 50 passionate staff members who are proudly part of the DOMO family.
“DOMO continues to operate as a family business with my wife Jane and daughter Gabrielle involved in the day-to-day operation of the business. I feel blessed to be working in an industry that I love along-side my family,” says Frank.
In his spare time, Frank enjoys travelling, particularly to Europe’s furniture trade fairs to source new inspiration for Australian homes and spending time with his family.
