We are excited to be shining a spotlight on beloved and award-winning German designer, Sebastian Herkner, who continues to attract attention with his outstanding product designs. Sebastian has previously released exclusive designs for Switzerland’s Wittmann and creative incubator Pulpo. He has also created designs for designer contemporary Chinese furniture brand, HC28 Cosmo.
Designing for many esteemed international, and often heritage brands, Sebastian creates furniture, lighting and objects that appeal to the senses through familiarity. All of his designs, are influenced by his observations of people and their actions, making for an end-product that is not only functional but also “speaks” to the end user. Not only are Sebastian’s designs praised with numerous prizes and accolades, but he too is celebrated, having been named Maison & Objet’s 2019 Designer of the Year.
Working with HC28 Cosmo for the first time, Sebastian Herkner combines his European background and experience in China to create fresh, versatile and elegant pieces suited to a metropolis and cosmopolitan lifestyle. The GRASSI table collection is inspired by the amazing quality of craftsmanship in the Grassi Museum in Germany and the glass windows in European cathedrals. The delicate metal structure is in solid contrast with the transparent glass tabletop and geometric cuttings of lines reflect light in a fascinating way.
Also offered at DOMO are notable designs for Wittmann, Pulpo and Ligne Roset by Sebastian Herkner. Together these designs truly highlight Sebastian’s approach to fusing tradition with creativity, and new technology with craftsmanship.
For Pulpo, lighting designs include, the STELLAR GRAPE floor and table lamp, inspired by a bunch of grapes with a cluster of 13 spherical glass shades that have hazy transparencies and rippled waves to diffuse a soft glow and create a beautiful setting. His BENT floor lamp is inspired by a trip to Veneto in Italy where he visited a glass-casting and bending company.
Furniture designs for Pulpo include the BENT Side Table, a striking combination of glass and marble and the MILA Side Table, based on the motto ‘the round must go into the square”, this piece sees two different shapes form together beautifully.
LEWA table by Sebastian Herkner for Ligne Roset was inspired by basalt columns, formed by the solidification and thermal contraction of magma flows. Sebastian was fascinated by these elements and how they can be arranged in wreath shapes. The LEWA table is divided into several separate sections in which a harmonious display of various objects can be arranged. Each component has its own unique shape, with one section being ceramic to be able to hold water for flowers.
Finally, Sebastian’s curiosity and interpretation can also be seen in his MERWYN and MILES collections for Wittmann, with bold hues and shapes that resemble the perfect macaron with piping to separate the cushions and act as the cream. These collections are complementary to each other, combining high seating comfort whilst invoking Wittmann´s unique craftsmanship.
Sebastian Herkner’s new designs for HC28 Cosmo and his iconic pieces from Pulpo, Wittmann and Ligne Roset are available exclusively at DOMO’s showrooms across Australia.
