Inspired by Australia’s underwater world, Melbourne-based artist Katie McKinnon explores marine life and enchanted ocean gardens in her vibrant paintings. We recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Katie for a photo shoot and it was great to learn more about her inspirations.
Katie has developed a strong following with collectors throughout Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America. Her paintings beautifully capture the enormity and fragility of life in the deep. There is a wonderful sense of fluidity and an intensity of colour that is calming yet commands your attention.

Shown on the Right: Ligne Roset Coat Rack Hourglass, Ligne Roset Space Console and RODA Double Pouf Ottoman.
Katie spent 20 years working in corporate marketing roles. After returning to Australia from a 10-year stint in Switzerland, she rekindled her desire to paint and her abstract marine life paintings were soon in demand.
The artist’s latest Marine Life series is inspired by the native fish and plant species of Southern Australia. She also spends time researching at the Melbourne Aquarium with her two young sons.
There’s a wonderful energy and optimism to Katie’s art – and, having met the artist herself, we can see why. It was great to collaborate with Katie and to catch an inspiring glimpse of life in the deep, from dry land.
