Meet Sebastian Herkner, designer for Wittmann, and the 2019 Maison & Objet Designer of the Year.
DOMO is excited to announce that Sebastian Herkner will be in Australia for the launch of Wittmann in July. The German designer has collaborated with many well-known brands, including Zanotta, Thonet, Moroso and ClassiCon and was elected Maison&Objet Designer of the Year for the January 2019 edition.
Herkner is as committed to the design process as the end product itself, taking an approach that fuses tradition with creativity, and new technology with craftsmanship. He has a flair for colour, materials and textures, and a genuine curiosity for different cultures.
Born in 1981, Herkner studied product design at HfG Offenbach University of Art and Design, focusing on objects and furniture and honing his keen sense for materials, colours and textures. He worked for Stella McCartney in London and founded his own studio in 2006. He has since designed furniture, lamps and objects for Wittmann, Cappellini, ClassiCon, Moroso, Thonet, Zanotta and many other esteemed brands, and accumulated numerous accolades along the way. This includes an IF Award, Iconic Award and Elle Deco International Design Award (EDIDA). Herkner designed “Das Haus” for imm cologne 2016, and as we mentioned earlier Designer of the Year for 2019 Maison&Objet.
Herkner sensitively emphasises function, material and detail in his work. He translates and interprets characteristics from society and culture and infuses everyday objects with respect and personality. This can be seen in a selection of his designs for Wittmann, Pulpo and Edition van Treeck, which will be available exclusively at DOMO.
Merwyn Collection for Wittmann
The Merwyn collection of chairs and armchairs combines exceptional comfort with optical lightness and Wittmann’s unique craftsmanship. Its curved design with optional armrest is inviting and personable, a single line of piping around the upholstered pocket-sprung cushion adds a graphic character.
Miles Collection for Wittmann
The Miles collection is based on the Merwyn chair, but with a thick, solid base that grounds it on the floor. The collection includes a swivel armchair, bean-shaped sofa and ottoman. The curving arm and backrest wraps around the chair providing a soft, round and protective space.
Stellar Grape for Pulpo
Stellar Grape is a floor and table lamp inspired by a bunch of grapes. A cluster of 13 spherical glass shades have hazy transparencies and rippled waves to diffuse a soft glow and create a beautiful setting.
Bent Floor Lamp for Pulpo
Herkner designed the Bent floor lamp inspired by a trip to Veneto in Italy where he visited a glass-casting and bending company. The lamp has large glass-casted lampshades shaped like shields, which wrap around a metal pole. The shades have a linear pattern on the interior surface, reflecting the LED light.
Pastille Table for Edition Van Treeck
The Pastille side tables are drops of coloured glass that overlap and melt into one another. Herkner found inspiration in the glass-fusing technique, which blurs the contours and colours of the cut-glass circles.
DOMO is the new exclusive Australian retailer of Wittmann, whose handcrafted furniture has a modern character, easy confidence and timeless quality that harks back to the origins of early modernist design. Sebastian Herkner will be in Australia in July 2019.
