Jean-Pierre Biasol leads his eponymous multidisciplinary studio from the heart with an elegant, unique European and Australian design aesthetic. The Director of Biasol Studio shares how the European design greats “I Maestri” inspire him, why his Casa Eterea project is unique, and the sentimental location of Biasol’s very first product prototypes.
Describe Biasol Studio’s design style in one sentence?
“That is a great question and too challenging to answer in one sentence! Our Biasol aesthetic embodies the finest aspects from Europe and Australia. Imagine the flair and passion of Italian design, the expertise and precision of German design, and the minimalistic functionality and craftsmanship of Scandinavian design.
“These influences are woven together through our studio’s Australian sensibilities and projected back into the world. This distinctive fusion enables Biasol to achieve a harmonious balance between simplicity and elegance, resulting in unique outcomes. At the heart of our work lies a genuine appreciation for the art of design.”
Which ‘design greats’ inspire you?
“While studying in Italy, I found inspiration in many of the design greats (known as I Maestri) such as Carlo Scarpa, Massimo Vingnelli, Dieter Rams, Ettore Sottsass, Pierre Jeanneret, and Achille Castiglione. These creative individuals have blurred the boundaries between art, architecture, interiors, products, graphics, and branding.
“This approach deeply resonated with me when I established the studio in 2012 and continues to shape our work today. We strive to approach all our projects and products holistically, without any divisions.”
How have the European design greats influenced your studio’s design process?
“Design for me and our studio, is a deliberate process of creating something beautiful, with careful consideration of its function, purpose, environmental, economics, aesthetics, and sociocultural impacts. My exposure to the European design greats (I Maestri) during my studies in Italy, inspires and influences our studio and our design approach.”
Jean-Pierre, how is Biasol pronounced?
I’m glad you asked! Biasol is pronounced ‘b–are–zoul’.
Name a recent Biasol project and share why it is special?
“We love the diversity of all our outcomes; we go through an in-depth creative exploration at the start of each project to ensure they are all uniquely different. The Casa Eterea residence is a recent example of this.
“Combining the classical with the contemporary, Casa Eterea embodies the essence of timeless elegance. The home’s light-filled spaces feel ethereal and effortless, and the refined palette and classical details transcend time for generations. By celebrating the original Victorian features of the house, Casa Eterea fosters an authentic and familiar look and feel. We collaborated with DOMO when curating the furniture and styling pieces for the home which include our Tre Mezzo stools and Tondo Mirrors.”
Which design philosophy do you value?
“Design for me is an exploration of ideas which continuously evolves and matures over time and throughout my life.”
Name 3 essential elements of any space?
“Natural light, texture, and colour tones.”
Jean-Pierre, what is the most cherished furniture item in your home?
“The very first prototypes of all our Biasol collections. These prototypes remind me every day of the design journey we go through from a great concept through to reality — and all the hard work and development in between.”
And what is the most recent addition?
“Our new collection which we are currently developing of solid timber products, launching in 2024.”
When you indulge, what is your guilty pleasure?
“With running the studio and having two kids it doesn’t leave much time! When I get the chance, a glass of Grange with my wife.”
What is your current furniture favourite from your Biasol collection?
“That is a difficult question to answer — naturally, I love them all.”
