Thomas Sabo’s Saboteur Concept Store Vienna is situated in the historical Spiegelgasse precinct. Combining luxury jewellery with a rock star feel, the store re-design needed to be on-brand and make design impact.

The store is situated on one of Vienna’s most famous streets for shopping in the old city centre. Nearby tall, style-conscious classical buildings sit adjacent to St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Graben.

It was right here, in October 2022, that jewellery designer Thomas Sabo opened his first international Saboteur store. The stores are known for mythical jewellery and adornments rooted in divine geometry. From this location Sabo has integrated a fine piercing studio as well as a new events and gallery space.

What was the Design Brief for the Saboteur’s Concept Store?

The expansive concept store occupies over two floors of approximately 150 square metres. The store is located in a historical landmark building. One can’t help but direct their gaze towards its expressive architecture and interior design features.

Oliver Klöss, director shop-fitting, points out, “We had a vision to create an all-inclusive brand experience for Thomas Sabo’s new “Saboteur” label. This was to be done via a store and gallery that reflect the vision and image of the brand.” The design brief also included the necessity of individualist Swiss furniture design – the famous ‘never ending’ DS-600 snake sofa.

What was the Interior Design Approach?

Saboteur has an unapologetic, disruptive approach to jewellery. Further to this, a balance of sustainability, mystique and high craftsmanship were required of the interior design. The furniture brief required an avant-garde, almost purist design language and be rounded off with a particular aura.

Why was the DS-600 Snake Sofa Chosen?

The challenge was to find furniture that encapsulates Saboteur’s vision using timeless design language while bringing brilliance of craftsmanship into the spotlight. This is where de Sede’s luxury leather furniture comes in.

With a rich history of leather workmanship and constant drive to create furniture sculptures uninfluenced by ephemeral trends, de Sede elegantly interplayed these elements. The design DNA of both brands fused perfectly together.

The bold design of the famous DS-600 snake sofa was selected as centrepieces of the event and gallery space. The natural shape of the DS-600 sofa purposefully breaks away from the conventions of typical seating design and reflects Sabateur’s ambitions, aiming to generate excitement.

Oliver Klöss corroborates this, “We’ve been familiar with the DS-600 for a long time. After all, it’s a design classic and fits in extremely well with our brand with its sculptural and one-of-a-kind appearance.”

Why Did Thomas Sabo Choose a DS-600 Sofa?

Two points were important to the team, composed of Thomas, Rita and Santiago Sabo. Firstly, that the quality of the materials and unique leather processing would meet the demanding requirements of its customers. And, secondly, that the individuality and flexibility of the entire store concept be communicated to the world through the DS-600’s modular nature.

de Sede satisfied the designers’ exacting demands, in terms of breaking up a room in an artful way. With a smile on his face, Oliver Klöss explains that there weren’t any hurdles to overcome with the planning for the DS-600. “The preparation and organisation went smoothly and simplified the entire process surrounding the opening of the store.”

Where is the DS-600 Sofa at the Saboteur Concept Store Vienna?

On the first floor of the new Thomas Sabo Saboteur Concept Store, de Sede’s sculpture is an iconic eye-catcher in the art gallery. The design seamlessly blends as a creatively timeless seating piece. The great flexibility of the DS-600 snake sofa makes it an invaluable piece of seating furniture for exhibitions and events, suitable for a wide range of purposes.
