Who designed the Kashima sofa?
The Kashima Sofa was dreamed up by Michel Ducaroy, the visionary and innovator behind the iconic Togo Fireside Chair and Settee. In fact, he designed the Kashima just 3 years after the Togo Fireside Chair.
As head of design at Ligne Roset, Michel Ducaroy possessed an intense spirit of innovation. In the 1970s, he embarked on a quest for new seating concepts. He explored exciting new materials such as foam, quilting and thermoplastics.
Utilising these new materials, plus exciting new production techniques, Ducaroy went on the develop a series of all-foam modular sofas. The iconic Ligne Roset Togo Fireside Chair was launched in 1973. By 1976 the Kashima was created. Then, Ducaroy retired just 10 years later.

What inspired the design of the Kashima sofa?
The Kashima settee is a dreamy reimagining of the traditional English Chesterfield sofa. Designer Michel Ducaroy takes this classic English-looking style and transforms it into a chic, slouchy, French design.
Michel Ducaroy has created Kashima with a touch of whimsy – a vast step away from hard traditional sofa shapes. The design projects playfulness with its fully quilted cover, pinched corner seams, and nest-shaped seat. Most unlike a traditional English Chesterfield.
